Appgen Accounting Package Reaches 6.0

Appgen, Inc. announced the release of MyBooks 6.0, a QuickBooks
like accounting package available for Linux and most other
popular platforms. According to the company's press release,
“MyBooks simplifies the accounting function for small to mid-size
business users and gives them the option to simultaneously
conduct higher level eBusiness by plugging into the enterprise
applications of larger companies like Wal-Mart.”

HP and MandrakeSoft Announce Desktop Linux Agreement

According to an announcement at Linux World Expo, MandrakeSoft and Hewlett-Packard Co. will work together to “promote and develop” desktop Linux solutions. The press release from the companies states that they will move to certify usage of Mandrake Linux on HP's line of Business-oriented PC's.

KDE Project Updates KDE 3.0 Development Schedule.

Third generation KDE platform release manager Dirk Mueller announced changes to the KDE release schedule moving the date up slightly and adding an additional beta release. “March 8th is the deadline for 3.0 final. I'll create the tarballs on that
day. packagers have time till 18th to prepare convenience binary packages
for the users.”

RedHat Linux 7.2 for Itanium Announced

RedHat, Inc. announced today that RedHat Linux 7.2 for Itanium processors is now available. This is particularly noteworthy since RedHat has finally started to offer a journaling file system in this release, making RedHat 7.2 a lot more ideal for enterprise systems than previous releases from the Research Triangle-based company.

Looking back at Open Source in 2001

Looking back over the past year, I think most people would have
to agree it has been a ground breaking time for open source.
While it is true that open source companies suffered just like
the rest of the tech sector from poor economic conditions, those
same conditions have also made open source appear even more
attractive.

KDE 3.0 Beta 1 Released

The KDE Project made KDE 3.0 Beta 1 available to the public yesterday. The new third generation beta of KDE moves the desktop to the QT 3.0 development platform, and sports numerous improvements.

KOffice Stabilizes

The KDE Project has announced the release of KOffice 1.1.1, an update to the official KDE office suite. The new release promises better stability, which could help make KOffice the suite of choice for light productivity needs.
